Renee Good was fatally shot by an ICE.

Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother and U.S. citizen, was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent earlier this month.

A Department of Homeland Security officer was seen on video kicking over a candle at a memorial set up for her.

According to officials, the shooting occurred on Wednesday, Jan. 7, during an immigration enforcement operation.

Authorities allege that a group of people began blocking the agents, and in the ensuing interaction, Good was shot. City officials later confirmed that Good suffered gunshot wounds to the head. She was rushed to a local hospital but died from her injuries.

Minneapolis City Council Member Jason Chavez described her as an observer who was “watching out for our immigrant neighbors” at the time of the incident.

Her death came just days after the Trump administration ramped up rhetoric regarding Somali immigrants and as ICE launched large-scale raids in the city.

Good leaves behind a six-year-old child from her previous marriage to Timmy Ray Macklin Jr., who passed away in 2023. Her former father-in-law, Timmy Ray Macklin Sr., said he was shocked by the news, adding that the couple’s young child has now lost both parents.

Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving, and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.

DHS Officer Filmed Kicking Memorial Candle for Renee Good

A video circulating on social media shows a uniformed federal officer kicking over a candle at a memorial for Renee Nicole Good. The officer is seen kicking over a flameless memorial candle.

The footage, which was first posted on Bluesky, shows an officer with a “Police DHS” patch walking through an outdoor memorial. The scene includes chalk art on the ground bearing Good’s name.

When a protester nearby confronted him, pointing at the memorial and asking what he thought the candle was for, the officer responded, “I don’t give a f–k.”

While early reports were unclear on the location, fact-checking site Snopes confirmed that the incident did not happen in Minnesota. Through visual analysis, Snopes determined the video was recorded outside the Department of Homeland Security office in Sacramento, California.

Furthermore, the officer in the video was not an ICE agent. His uniform bore the patch of the Federal Protective Service (FPS), a separate law enforcement agency within the DHS responsible for protecting federal buildings.

The memorial in Sacramento was one of many held across the country following the death of Renee Nicole Good. The circumstances of her shooting have sparked significant controversy.

While the Department of Homeland Security claimed that Good “weaponized her vehicle” and that the agent acted in self-defense, local leaders have strongly disputed this.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has disputed DHS’s characterization of the incident.

They are already trying to spin this as an action of self defense, having seen the video for myself, I want to tell everybody directly, that is bulls—.This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody getting killed.
