A brand-new Neon Genesis Evangelion anime has been announced as part of the franchise’s 30th-anniversary events, and the choice of writer is a headline in itself: acclaimed game auteur Yoko Taro will handle series composition and the script for the project.

The production is a collaboration between long-time steward Studio Khara and popular studio CloverWorks, and the announcement came during the EVANGELION:30+ festival in Yokohama that marked three decades since the original series debuted.

Veteran director Kazuya Tsurumaki is attached to direct alongside Toru Yatabe, and the score will be provided by composer Keiichi Okabe, best known for his work on the NieR games.

An official teaser surfaced with the announcement; it offers atmospheric visuals and a brief, cryptic glimpse of a new Eva unit but reveals no plot details or release date.

The teaser underlines that this is the first full-series Evangelion project announced since the Rebuild films and that the creative team may take the property in a fresh direction.

What this means for fans is twofold. First, Yoko Taro’s involvement signals a very different storytelling voice than many associate with Evangelion; his games are known for subversive, philosophical narratives, which raises both excitement and cautious curiosity about tone and canon.

Second, the Khara × CloverWorks pairing and the return of familiar staff suggest the project will respect the franchise’s visual and thematic DNA while potentially reworking it for new audiences.

At this early stage, key questions remain unanswered: whether the series will follow the original TV timeline, continue from the Rebuild continuity, or forge an entirely new path; when the show will air; and how involved original creator Hideaki Anno will be behind the scenes.

Official channels say the series is in production, but fans will have to wait for further announcements on casting, episode count, and distribution.

For now, the news is a clear signal that Neon Genesis Evangelion will be an active franchise for the next chapter of anime, led by an unusually high-profile roster.

Expect debate and deep analysis as more materials appear; the teaser was designed to provoke that exact reaction
