An anonymous Indian person from Ballard shared a disturbing situation on Reddit while he and his wife drove to meet their friends for dinner.
They experienced blatant racism and asked the community if it was a common sentiment in Redmond lately.
Racism is the belief that one race is better than another.
It’s a prejudice or discrimination directed against someone based on their race or ethnicity.
Racism hurts people in deep and lasting ways and causes emotional pain, fewer opportunities, and a divided society. Everyone should listen, learn, speak up, check their biases, and support fairness to end it.
Racism is a difficult subject, but by understanding it better, everyone can all play a part in creating a world where they are valued and treated equally. It starts with simple acts of kindness and a willingness to see the humanity in every person.
Redmond Driver Accused of Yelling Racist Slur at Indian Visitor
A visit to Redmond for dinner took a disturbing turn for a Ballard resident, after he says a fellow driver shouted a racist slur at him.
In a post on Reddit, the man, who is Indian, described the incident that happened while he was parked inside the Avalon Apartments complex. He said it was dark and raining, so he pulled over to the curb and turned on his hazard lights while waiting to pick up his wife.
According to the post, another driver pulled up next to him and shouted, “Go back to India and learn to drive.”
The man from Ballard apologized and tried to explain he was simply waiting for his wife, but said the driver doubled down, replying, “You all Indians don’t know how to drive, go back to India.”
When the victim called him out for being racist, the driver allegedly responded with a curse word before driving off.
The Reddit user expressed shock at the encounter, stating he has lived in the Ballard area for a while and had “never experienced anything like this.” He noted that the confrontation happened on a private road inside the apartment complex and that he had not been blocking traffic.
I’ve lived in Ballard for a while and never experienced anything like this. Is this a common sentiment in Redmond lately? It was incredibly stunning to face such direct hate in an area that is supposed to be so diverse.

He was frozen in fear of the incident, and his wife actually shouted at him to record their car, but they drove away.
I actually learned to drive here in the US, and in my 3.5 years of driving with a clean record, I take pride in being a thoughtful and lawful driver. I always yield to pedestrians and prioritize being courteous to others on the road.

The incident has sparked a discussion online about racism and community in the Eastside city, known for its large and diverse population, particularly of South Asian origin.
Redmond and Bellevue and a lot of the rest of the Eastside have a huge South Asian community, while most people are normal and would be chill, there’s gonna be some garbage people with anti-Indian sentiment, unfortunately (anti-Indian sentiment has been increasing a lot recently, as you can see online or in places like California, British Columbia or Ontario).
