An Amber Alert has been issued for 17 year old Briana Guerra after she was reported missing Tuesday morning in San Antonio.
Authorities say she was last seen around 8 a.m. near the Bexar County Jail in the 1100 block of West Commerce Street. Her family says she walked out of the facility alone following what they describe as a serious mental health episode.
According to relatives, Briana had been attending a weekend convention at Community Bible Church when she began experiencing distress Saturday evening.
Her mother, Raquel Guerra, said her daughter had missed a prescribed dose of medication during the event. When Briana’s condition worsened, San Antonio police arrested her on a family assault charge.
Under Texas law, 17 year olds are treated as adults in the criminal justice system, and she was booked into the Bexar County Jail early Sunday afternoon.
Court records show she was cleared for release at 3:50 a.m. Monday. However, her mother said security footage shows Briana leaving the jail on foot shortly before 8 a.m.
Family members had expected she would be released directly into their custody. Instead, they say she exited alone without her phone, money or medication.
Briana is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing about 130 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a blue short sleeved shirt, denim shorts and blue glitter Crocs.
She has a nose piercing and a tattoo of a marigold flower with Roman numerals on her left arm. Her family believes she may be disoriented because she has not had her medication for at least 48 hours.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is leading the search and has asked anyone with information to call 210 335 6000 or email [email protected]. Officials said a spokesperson would provide further comment regarding the circumstances of her release.
Family members say they are especially concerned given Briana’s recent history and past trauma. In 2024, her older brother, Matthew Guerra, was shot and killed along with his pregnant girlfriend.
Her mother said the loss deeply affected Briana’s mental health and that she has struggled since that time. Although Briana ran away once before during the summer of 2024, her mother insists this situation feels different and more urgent.
Relatives and volunteers have searched areas near downtown San Antonio, including a reported sighting at a McDonald’s near Alamo Plaza, but so far there have been no confirmed leads. On Tuesday, loved ones began posting flyers and spreading word on social media, urging the public to remain alert.
The case has also sparked renewed discussion about how mental health situations are handled within the jail system, particularly for teens who are legally considered adults under Texas law.
Briana’s mother said she repeatedly informed authorities about her daughter’s medical needs and pleaded for her not to be taken to jail during the episode.
As the search continues, family members are asking the community to keep watch and to report any possible sightings immediately.
They say their only focus now is bringing Briana home safely and ensuring she receives the care they believe she urgently needs.
