Over the weekend in Jeffersonville, Indiana, 41-year-old Jasmine Sheckles found herself at the center of a chaotic incident that began with a simple assault and escalated into a high-stakes police pursuit along Interstate 65.
According to reports from Jeffersonville police, the ordeal started when a woman approached officers claiming she had been punched multiple times and had her cellphone stolen.
The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment while investigators quickly identified Sheckles as the suspect.
Sheckles, a native of Jeffersonville who attended Jeffersonville High School and later studied at Ivy Tech Community College, had previously worked at Husky Rack & Wire in the area.
After locating and arresting Sheckles in connection with the assault and theft, things took a shocking turn.
Authorities allege that while in custody, Sheckles managed to gain control of a marked Jeffersonville police cruiser and sped away, striking an officer in the process as she fled the scene.
The injured officer was transported to a hospital but was later cleared by medical staff and released.
The escape triggered an immediate pursuit as Sheckles headed onto I-65. The chase came to an abrupt end when the stolen cruiser crashed.
Undeterred, police say Sheckles then attempted to steal yet another vehicle from the area before officers finally subdued and re-arrested her.
Sheckles now faces a slew of serious charges, including attempted murder, escape, and several additional offenses related to the initial assault, thefts, and the overall chain of events.
Details about the officer’s exact injuries or long-term condition have not been publicly released by authorities.
This wild sequence of events has left many in the southern Indiana community stunned, turning what began as a routine response to an assault into one of the more unusual police chases in recent memory.
The case remains under investigation, with more details potentially emerging as court proceedings move forward.
