On Monday, February 23, 2026, authorities confirmed that Eddie Darren Duncan, 23, was released from custody earlier that same day before becoming a suspect in a brutal double homicide in north Minneapolis.
Duncan had been arrested on February 15 on felony warrants charging him with unauthorized weapon possession and fleeing police following a high-speed traffic stop in Robbinsdale, Minnesota.
During that incident, officers attempting to pull Duncan over for speeding and running a red light say he initially stopped, then sped away at high speed and eventually crashed his vehicle.
He fled on foot, leaving behind his cellphone and a Glock pistol modified with an auto sear and an extended magazine.
Despite the serious nature of the charges, Duncan was released from Hennepin County Jail on the morning of February 23, just hours before the killings occurred.
Reports indicate that a mental competency order had been filed by a judge, yet Duncan was still ordered released into the community.
Later that afternoon, Duncan allegedly went to a residence in north Minneapolis and fatally shot two of his relatives, a 23-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that the victims were family members of the suspect.
Shortly after the double homicide, Duncan was involved in a confrontation with police in Brooklyn Center, where he was reportedly waving a handgun in a business district.
Officers exchanged fire with Duncan, who was struck and later pronounced dead at a hospital. No officers were injured.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the officer-involved shooting, and law enforcement agencies continue to piece together the timeline leading up to the tragedy.
