The long search for a Lane County fugitive came to an end this week as Jack Duane Crist arrested, headlines surfaced following his capture in Northern California.
After nearly two years of tracking movements across multiple states, authorities confirmed that Jack Duane Crist’s arrest operations concluded successfully on February 17, 2026.
According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, 48-year-old Crist, a Florence, Oregon resident, had been wanted after failing to appear for sentencing in 2024.
The development that led to Jack Duane Crist’s arrest in Chico followed coordinated efforts between local, state, and federal agencies.
Crist had previously been arrested in January 2023 in Florence in connection with a case involving a juvenile victim.
He later entered a guilty plea in Lane County Circuit Court to first-degree rape and first-degree attempted rape.
However, in June 2024, he did not appear in court for sentencing. As a result, a warrant was reissued on the original charges, which included three counts of first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, and first-degree attempted rape.
Once he disappeared, investigators began a wide-ranging effort that ultimately led to the moment when Jack Duane Crist was arrested, which became reality nearly two years later.
Detectives initially developed information suggesting Crist had fled to Alaska. However, confirming his location proved difficult.
Over time, authorities determined he had resurfaced in West Plains, Missouri, where he was reportedly living under an alias. Before officers could move in, he left the area again.
Investigators later confirmed Crist had spent close to a year in Yucca, Arizona. Yet once again, by the time law enforcement narrowed in on his location, he had relocated.
Officials believe he used the names “Zane Carson” and “Jack Watson” during his time as a fugitive, complicating efforts to ensure that Jack Duane Crist’s arrest would finally occur.
Earlier this month, detectives received intelligence that Crist might be in Bly, Oregon, east of Klamath Falls.
On February 17, authorities executed a search warrant at a residence with assistance from the Oregon State Police SWAT team. Although Crist was not located during that operation, two residents were arrested for allegedly hindering prosecution.
Within days, investigators learned Crist had traveled south to California — a key breakthrough that soon led to Jack Duane Crist’s arrest in Chico.
The Chico Police Department was contacted by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service after information indicated Crist was staying at a residence in the 1500 block of East Lassen Avenue.
Chico detectives quickly organized a surveillance operation. Within hours of monitoring the property, officers observed a man leaving the residence who matched Crist’s distinct physical characteristics. Authorities positively identified him and moved in.
He was taken into custody on his outstanding felony warrant and transported to the Butte County Jail. Officials confirmed he will remain in custody pending extradition to Lane County, Oregon, where he will face sentencing proceedings.
