Jerome Tang’s wife, Careylyen Tang, better known as Rey, has been with him for almost 2 decades since 1996.
Reportedly, the couple first met on a blind date on September 7, 1996, while Jerome was coaching basketball at Heritage Christian Academy in Texas.
During that time, he was getting close to his 30s and had been thinking about settling down. As cliched as it sounds the date just worked right from the start.
In no time, things worked out and they spent the next five months getting to know each other better and then got engaged.
Six months later, on August 2, 1997, Jerome and Rey walked down the aisle. It all happened within about 11 months of that first meeting.
Life wasn’t always smooth, as Jerome was still building his coaching career at the high school level.
In fact, before they even tied the knot, he had taken in two boys, Lamar and Richard Hurd, and brought them up as his own.
After the wedding, the couple had two more children, a son named Seven and a daughter named Aylyn.
Rey has mentioned how she learned to stretch every bit of money to cover the week, especially when the kids were little, and Jerome’s coaching jobs didn’t pay much.
One story they like to share shows how close things got at times. Back when Jerome was hoping to join the staff at Baylor, the head coach, Scott Drew, came over for dinner.
They had just ten dollars and eighty-one cents in the whole house. Rey figured out a way to pull together a meal using some ribs her dad had made and a few other things she picked up, and it worked out.
Jerome has talked about his wife in different settings over the years, always in a genuine way.
In one talk he gave, he described how he had asked God to send him the right person right around the time he turned 30, and then Rey came into his life.
He revealed that they got engaged 6 months after meeting and married 5 months after the engagement, and by then they had been together more than 25 years.
Jerome and Rey even appeared together on The 700 Club in 2023, sitting down to talk about their life.
Likewise, every now and then, Jerome shares an appreciation post for Rey on occasions like anniversaries and more.
On their 25th wedding anniversary, he addressed Rey as the love of his life and his best friend, writing:
Happy 25th Anniversary to my best friend and the love of my life @care.l.tang We’ve only just begun!!!
On Mother’s Day, he makes a point to thank her for being such a great mom to their kids, saying she’s the best one they could have.
