A heartbreaking accident in Hesperia, California, claimed the life of 48-year-old John L. Hewitt from Victorville last week.

John Hewitt was riding his bicycle when he was first struck by a green 2021 Subaru Forester.

The impact threw him off his bike and onto the ground. Tragically, while he lay there, a white 2014 Toyota Camry then hit him as well.

Emergency responders from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and fire personnel arrived quickly, but Hewitt succumbed to his injuries right at the scene.

He was pronounced dead by medical personnel shortly after.

Deputies from the Hesperia station investigated the crash and shared preliminary details in an official statement. They noted that both drivers stayed at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators.

No arrests have been reported so far, and the exact cause, such as visibility issues in the early morning darkness or other factors, is still under review.

This sad event highlights the dangers that cyclists face on busy roads, especially in low-light conditions.

Highway 395 is a major route in the High Desert area, and intersections like this one near the Hesperia Park & Ride and across from the Pilot Travel Center see heavy traffic even early in the day.

Authorities are still asking for help from the public. If anyone witnessed the crash or has information that could assist the investigation, they can contact the Hesperia Police Department at (760) 947-1500.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the We-Tip hotline at (800) 782-7463.

Our thoughts go out to John Hewitt’s family, friends, and the Victorville community during this difficult time.

Losing someone so suddenly is never easy, and incidents like this remind us all to stay alert and share the road safely.
